When the going gets tough PM's go foreign

Scott Morrison is renewing his interest in foreign policy matters. The QUAD is now his favoured subject. The opportunity to big note himself with presidents and fellow prime ministers sure beats answering pesky questions about sex crimes. We will be hearing plenty more about his important talks with American, Indian and Japanese counterparts in the weeks ahead. Much safer than giving details of chats with his Attorney General and Defence Minister.

Seeking solace from the realities of local political life in matters of foreign policy has long been the choice of Australian Prime Ministers. It's a freedom that's like going on holday and PM Morrison is not the first to take advantage of it nor will he be the last. Just that it is occurring earlier in his term of office than normal - 18 months is not a long time in political life.
